How to Solve a Word Search by Hand

The solver finds every word in seconds, but these steps help when you want to solve a puzzle yourself or only need a hint.

  1. 1

Read the whole word list first

Note the longest words and any word with a rare letter such as Q, Z, X, J or K. Those are the easiest to spot in a sea of common letters.

  2. 2

Hunt for the rarest letter, not the first one

To find QUIZ, scan the grid for Q or Z instead of every U and I. A rare letter narrows the search to a few starting points.

  3. 3

    Check all 8 neighbors

When you find a starting letter, look at the 8 letters around it for the next letter of the word. The direction that matches tells you which way the word runs.

  4. 4

Follow the line letter by letter

Keep going in that direction until the word is complete. If a letter does not match, go back to the start and try the next neighbor.

  5. 5

    Use double letters as anchors

Pairs like LL, EE, OO or SS stand out when you scan a row. Words such as LETTER or HIDDEN are quicker to find from their double letters.

  6. 6

Save backwards and diagonal words for last

Puzzle makers often hide the hardest words right to left, bottom to top or on a diagonal. Once the easy words are marked, scan the remaining letters in those directions.
